The 18th National Competition of Theater 'José Baeza Clemares' of La Unión is held this year from 7 to 16 November, in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and Culture.

Six companies of the Region participate in this edition, which will be held at the Asensio Sáez Cultural Center in the locality.

Ana María Rodríguez, the general director of the Institute of Cultural Industries and Arts (ICA), Marta Lopez-Briones, presented today the event with the councilor of the City Council of La Union, Ana Maria Rodríguez, where she highlighted "the great work done by the organizers in an event that comes this year to the consolidated age as a benchmark in amateur theater and as an interesting proposal within the wide cultural offer that we can find in the municipalities of the Region of Murcia.

The contest 'José Baeza Clemares' will start on Wednesday, November 7, with the performance of the company Badar Kablar of La Union, which will stage the comedy 'With a pair of diamonds', composed of five 'sketches' by various authors .

The next day, La Barraca de Federico, from San Pedro del Pinatar, will present a work written and directed by Enrique Fuster del Alcázar ('Encadenados') that analyzes the unpredictability of human nature and the risk of confusing love and obsession.

The actresses of Portmán Teatro (Portmán, La Unión) will represent the comedy 'From woman to woman' on November 9, and on Wednesday, the 14th, it will be the turn of Triana Teatro (La Unión) with 'No thief that does not come well ', a text by the Italian playwright Darío Fo that reveals the double morality of the bourgeoisie.

The last work in competition will be 'The corpse of Mr. García', by Jardiel Poncela, which will be staged on November 15 by the Apolo Theater Company of El Algar (Cartagena).

Those responsible for closing the contest, on Friday 16, will be students of the Dramatic Art School of Murcia, who will present outside the contest and as a guest group the comedy 'TrasTOCados', by the French playwright and comedian Laurent Baffie.

All performances will take place at 9:30 p.m. and admission will be free until full capacity is reached.

The head of the ICA recalled during the presentation that "events like the one of La Union and companies like those that participate in it contribute to open the culture to the whole society, since they are free performances that star actors who, even if they do not work professionally to the theater, they transmit from the stage their enthusiasm for culture, thus also bringing the world of performing arts to new viewers ".

During the last evening, the National Theater Competition 'José Baeza Clemares' will award six prizes: the best company, the best director and the best actors and leading actresses and cast.

The award consists of a ceramic sculpture made by students of the center for people with disabilities Andrés Martínez Cánovas.

Baeza Clemares

José Baeza Clemares (Alumbres, 1857 La Unión, 1920) is one of the great names of the scene in La Unión.

His figure embodies the golden age of the theater in the mining city, lived between the late nineteenth century and the early twentieth.

For forty years, from 1880 to 1920, he worked as an actor, stage director and businessman for the company that bore his name.

Baeza interpreted and directed all kinds of productions, from comedy to drama, but he stood out above all for his versions of the works of Nobel Prize winner José Echegaray.

The Principal Theater of La Union witnessed its representations and a street of the town bears his name.
