STERM-I denounces the institutional abandonment of the Santiago Apóstol de Portmán school (13/12/2018)

If the lack of investment in public centers in our region by the Ministry of Education is a constant, the Public School Santiago Apostle of Portman is one of the most bleeding examples.

An old center that presents a series of structural deficiencies that are increasing year after year thanks to the inaction of both the Ministry of Education and the City of La Union.

The list of serious problems that can even be dangerous for both the students and the teaching staff is really extensive.

It has an obsolete electrical network, made up of patches where the power cuts are frequent, where it is impossible to light a stove or a fan and where old plugs are out, broken channels and a serious risk of faults difficult to predict.

Dangerous fences cut with pliers, leaving pieces of wire in the shape of a point at the height of the children.

Patios without any shade in the highest area of the town without possibility of shelter, slopes, curbs and rotten soils and that turn out to be a focus of accidents for years.

Walls with humidity, recurrent leaks, doors from the 1970s that do not fit and are blocked leaving the students and teachers confined.

Infantile toilets at the other end of the school ...

Special mention deserves the roof of the school being of fiber cement, totally deteriorated to be strongly subjected to erosion and corrosion of the Sierra Minera, observing the typical reddish ocher color that characterizes the area and that does not even include in the list of removal centers of this material so dangerous and harmful to health.

These are, quickly, some of the deficiencies of the center that, in addition, are known by the Minister of Education who, in October 2017 visited the school and committed, even through social networks, to put urgent remedies.

From STERM Intersindical we denounce the lack of will to solve effectively the problems, the lack of investment, the mistreatment carried out to the public network of centers and to the educational communities that coexist in them.

A community, which in the case of the CEIP Santiago Apostle of Portmán, stays united and doing an excellent educational work despite the neglect and abandonment of its center;

a community that can count on our work and our support.
