The city council of La Unión and Acciona continue with the environmental restoration project of the Sierra Minera "33 en verde" (09/09/2020)

Within the '33 en Verde 'Project, whose main purpose is the environmental recovery of the Sierra Minera de La Unión, the company Acciona has delivered the necessary irrigation material to continue with the reforestation of the lands under the road of 33 . The '33 en Verde 'project was started in 2019 by the Association for the Recovery of the Autochthonous Forest of Cartagena-La Unión (ARBA) and the Association of Southeast Naturalists (ANSE), with the collaboration of the City Council of La Unión, as well as of neighbors, volunteers and local businesses.

In the first phase, during the 2019-20 season, work has been done on an area of ??about 12,000 m2 on a municipal property plot under the road of 33 and the Agrupa Vicenta mine, and around 1,200 trees and shrubs have been planted.

autochthonous species, such as the Cartagena cypress (Tetraclinis articulata), the holm oak (Quercus rotundifolia), the mastic (Pistacia lentiscus) or the arto (Maytenus senegalensis).

Likewise, in collaboration with the General Directorate of the Natural Environment of the Region of Murcia,We have participated in the recovery program for the Cartagena rockrose (Cistus heterophyllus), a critically endangered species, with the implantation of some 40 specimens of this species donated by the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia.

To guarantee the survival of the specimens, a drip irrigation system was installed and a cistern that was in a dilapidated state was fixed. In addition to reforestation with native species, action has been taken on the plot by clearing the land of numerous debris that had been illegally dumped and invasive species, such as aloes or agaves, have been eliminated. For the next 2020-21 season that begins this fall, it is planned that the '33 en verde 'project will be expanded with the incorporation of some 25,000 m2 of two new plots, also under the road of 33, and whose environmental restoration will be possible thanks to the collaboration of the company that owns them, Portmán Golf SL.The provision of the necessary material provided by Acciona has been possible thanks to the efforts of the City Council of La Unión and will allow to start with the installation of the irrigation system shortly, so that, as soon as the rains start and the temperature drops, can immediately start planting trees on the two new plots.

It is estimated that around 2,500 seedlings of native species typical of the Sierra Minera can be planted on the new farms.
