in the Plaza Joaquín Costa, the delivery of this recognition will take place each year gives visibility to the workers of the La Unión mines and their widows | As every year, the International Festival of Cante de las Minas pays tribute to the miners, those workers who were part of the history of La Unión and who worked in their land under the harsh working conditions of the time. It is a nod to its history and its people that is not lacking in this 60th edition either.

This year, it will be Francisco Casanova Sánchez who will collect the recognition of the miner.

At the age of 14, he began to carry baskets of ore from one gallery to another, until at 18 he was old enough to work in the mine.

Thus, he was in Lo Veremos de El Garbanzal, El Huerto, the Cierva Mine, La Ocasión and San Rafael de El Gorguel. The aftermath of the 22 years that he dedicated to mining are now maintained, at 77, in a voice muted by throat cancer that approached him at 35 and which led him to undergo several interventions. They retired him at 40.

He affirms that this knowledge that is given to him in La Unión "is a very great thank you." "I did not expect it," he confesses, while he does not hesitate to show the love he has for his land, which he now sees "with a different tone." The tribute to the miner's widow is for Francisca Ortiz Martínez, whose husband Sebastián Morales Bayona had been working for 25 years in mining and died in September 2019. He entered the activity at the age of 14 and was dedicated to drilling holes and ditches in the mines.

They removed him at 39 years of age, with a grade III silicosis that he maintained until his death.

The family remembers the “pride” that he assumed to have been a miner, despite the hard work; a job that he did not like to talk about much because of everything he had lived through. “We are happy for this recognition because he deserves it.

I would have liked him to have received it, because he was very excited to have it, but we collect it on his behalf, ”says Rocío Morales Ortiz, the miner's daughter. The tribute to both will take place on July 29 at 8:00 p.m.
