The new Mining Museum The Union will have a regional Centre of Mining Research (14/02/2011)

The Minister of Culture and Tourism, Pedro Alberto Cruz, accompanied by the mayor of La Union, Francisco Bernabé, today introduced the new draft Mining Museum in La Union, which aims to become a national reference and whose works are expected to give start next summer.

Cruz said that "with the cultural and social material that the Union has always been, is knowing how to build one of the cultural and tourism projects most exciting and largest around the Mediterranean."

He added that "what is intended with this new design of the Mining Museum is an update of it, introducing the factors of excellence that are backbone for other important projects such as the Sierra Minera.

In short, he said, "we have a new infrastructure with a cultural facility equipped with all the advances, which will mean another piece and claim more for everything that is entering the Union."

The Mining Museum will present the same location, the former Labor Lyceum, but doubling its size for this plot has acquired the dilapidated building that completes the block.

In addition, keep the exterior of the existing building, although the interior will be emptied and then dig a basement, so that the result will be a new building.

As he explained the editor of the project architect, Javier Aguilar, the goal is to convert the Mining Museum in an exhibition space and teaching art that is fun, engaging and participatory approach to surround museum, and have a highlighted the use of resources and new technologies that invite to discover the unionense mining heritage.

So, first of all, the museum not only have a display area, equipped with the best technical and audiovisual equipment for the public to get mine sensory experiences, but also will host the first Regional Research Centre for Mining with a large file room and library, meeting room and administration area.

Also have a temporary exhibition space, which will accommodate both mining in its various expressions and all kinds of artistic, and from which may be seen a large central skylight to be located in a monumental eight meters mining headframe high, a symbol which will serve as a tribute to the living history of the municipality.

The new Mining Museum will also offer a room-auditorium seating about 300 spectators and with the latest technology, such as booths for simultaneous translation, to enable the holding of conferences, concerts, cinema projection and realization theatrical performances.

This project has an investment of 2.6 billion euros, of which the autonomous region contributes 80 percent and the City the remaining 20 percent.
