Union, February 21, 2011.

The City of La Union and The Machinist Lift Foundation have signed an agreement whereby the latter gave, by way of deposit, a large collection of patents and design models of industrial machines and several models in wood molding cast, elements that were used in its manufacturing plants day of the lifting machine.

The mayor of La Union, Francisco Bernabé, and the president of the Foundation, Jorge Gonzalez, have signed this agreement to these models and patents at the time part of the collections that may be permanent or temporary exhibition within of that project.

This initiative within the important work to restore the local heritage that is being done in La Union for cultural and tourism serves as a prelude to talks that are being developed at present and that, in short, can give rise to the facilities of 12,000 square meters of the lifting machine to become municipal property.

The objective is to make the machine, popular icon of the industrial era of the Union since the early twentieth century, be restored and converted into a cultural center, social, museum, research and training in the municipality.

The lifting machine was a mechanical and iron and steel industry in La Union founded in 1890 by the wealthy mining Sáez Miguel Zapata - "Uncle Wolf" - who ordered its foundry facilities and construction of machinery which had the exclusive brand for all Spain.

The company, which got into his cast structures Lyceum Workers Union, the Old Public Market and the distinguished mansions in Cartagena, among others, was leading in Spain in the construction of centrifugal pumps, patented by herself, and was in its heyday with a staff of 300.

Commonwealth Miguel Zapata and Sons was forced to give up after the postwar years this company to the Society Peñarroya-Spain, SA for their orders to the Peñarroya own and other area businesses, especially Escombreras Oil Refinery until the crisis in the minerals sector in the eighties forced its closure on 1 July 1988.
