RM EQUO unacceptable radioactive waste to be deposited within two kilometers of the Union (28/04/2012)

The intent of the regional government and the city of Cartagena to deposit 400 tons of soil contaminated with radioactive phosphogypsum (waste product resulting from the synthesis of chemical fertilizers by the company Potasas and derivatives) in the landfill Chiquita Cross, a few two kilometers from the center of La Union is, according to EQUO RM, a real nonsense, as there is a likely risk that radioactive substances and heavy metals that these aggregates contain can contaminate groundwater.

Because phosphogypsum containing radioactive uranium and thorium, RM EQUO estimated that the proper place to store such substances should be a nuclear waste storage and a landfill that does not meet the conditions sufficient to ensure that such substances are not seep into the ground .

On the other hand, EQUO supports the recovery of the deputation of "The Hondón", where waste currently, although monitored for the development plan that seeks the municipal government of the city arises from departmental and sustainable ecological parameters , including the creation of a large green lung manifest as a symbol of regeneration of the areas most affected by pollution of the city.

Citizens are reminded that the lack of greenery is one of the pending issues in the city.

RM EQUO further believes that it is necessary to the gradual abandonment of the practice of industrial agriculture, which makes use of synthetic fertilizers, as in this case, contain heavy metals and radioactive elements, substances that can affect agricultural workers themselves and the ecosystem surrounding, in addition to joining the food chain through water, and replace it with organic farming, toxic-free and the economic dependence of the multinational pharmaceutical and chemical, to respect our aquifers and we bring to the table, tasty, varied and healthy.

Equo is a social and political movement whose basic pillars Ecology, Social Equity, the defense of Human Rights and Democracy.
