Family allocates 569,000 euros to the day center for people with disabilities The Union (08/10/2015)

The Minister of Family and Equal Opportunities, Thomas Violante, and the mayor of La Union, Pedro Lopez Milan, today visited the Day Centre for people with intellectual disabilities 'Andrés Martínez Canovas' of this town, which the Instituto Murciano Action Social (IMAS) allocated 569,000 euros this year for its operation.

Thomas Violante The Minister referred to "the great experience of this center, which emerged at the request of a group of parents of people with intellectual disabilities" and in 1982 joined the Post 'Andrés Martínez Canovas' Foundation for the care of people with intellectual disabilities of La Union, Cartagena and San Javier.

Since 2010 it depends on the IMAS and "is an example of how a family could be a source of demand this great center, which provides services and support to increase the personal autonomy of all users," he said.

The Minister and the mayor later visited the two senior centers in the municipality, one under the IMAS, which has over 3,700 members, and the other municipally owned.

The minister referred to the quality of services provided at both senior centers.

"We are going to enhance collaboration with the City of La Union as a center of the municipality, for which the study IMAS arrange seats in order to improve the supply of services," he said.

"Our commitment is to promote active and healthy aging, which promotes personal autonomy, integration and full participation, because the elderly are the pillars of our families and society, and the recognition they have earned deserve" said Thomas Violante.

The Ministry of Family and Equal Opportunities provides services to about 9,000 seniors in the region of Murcia.

In 2015 the Region has 2,457 public places available in nursing homes.

During this course 2014/2015 there have been more than 350 workshops on gerontogimnasia, crafts, poetry, theater, painting and intergenerational exchanges.

More than 30,000 seniors in the region participate in one or more activities organized in these workshops.
