Public Works is working on the regeneration of the bay of Portman to the development of new technologies for soil decontamination (18/02/2009)

The regional government plans to build the future port which will host the bay after regeneration

The Minister of Public Works and Planning, José Ballesta, attended today's committee to monitor the collaboration agreement signed by the Autonomous Community, the Ministry of Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs and the City of La Union, to regenerate Portman Bay, where the Department funds the research for the development of new technologies for remediation of soil and the future port projects that build community in the bay after his regeneration by the Ministry.

With respect to research on new technologies for remediation of soil, Ballesta said: "These projects, in which the Ministry is working since 2004 through the Service Quality Management in Construction, allow environmental recovery of the bay, using techniques site treatment aimed at recovery of soils contaminated by heavy metals, eliminating the risks to health and the ecosystem. "

This is a pilot project developed by the multidisciplinary team at the University of Murcia, which contributes to the regeneration of the bay, under the coordination of the teachers Carmen Pérez Sirvent and Maria Jose Martinez.

The project of the University of Murcia and funded by the Autonomous Community focuses primarily on the manufacture of concrete with sand from the bay of Portman to contribute to the reuse of the same.

This is the 'recycling' of waste from construction and quarrying of aggregates containing limestone filler-subject to the rules of Waste / 98 which should be treated before going to landfill, "giving a new use as decontaminating agents heavy metals.

The results obtained in experiments carried out in laboratories, Architecture and Housing Department have been allowed to observe the effectiveness of this procedure which will solve two problems: the processing of such waste in a new product and the immobilization of materials Heavy contained in contaminated soil.

In this regard, the Minister said "Thanks to this research, which are drawn encouraging results, researchers at the University of Murcia have developed a proprietary technology, easily and cost-based materials in our own region, that allows its application to specific cases, such as the regeneration of the Portman Bay. "

Public works projects the new port

During the monitoring committee, the Minister of Public Works addressed the proposed new port infrastructure to the Ministry of Public Works constructed in the bay after regeneration of the area by the Ministry.

The director announced that available at the southern end of a green zone of separation between the port and the beach which will occupy an area exceeding 26,000 square meters and another 32,000 meters for parking boats.

Also, Ballesta said "the project, which is currently being drafted, has gathered the main demands neighborhood, including environmental integration and recovery of old fishing port."

For integration into the environment and improving the performance landscape, vessels of great length shall be provided near the pedestrian walkway that will border the facility, which has reserved an exclusive area for fishing use.
