The MARM goes ahead with the recovery project and environmental soundness of Portman Bay (18/02/2009)

The Secretary General of the Sea, Juan Carlos Martín, has considered it possible that in approximately 6 months are available Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) Project and the Environmental Impact Study of regeneration and environmental soundness of Portman Bay, located in the Directorate General of Environmental Quality along its course naturally.

This topic has been addressed this morning by the Monitoring Committee of the Convention Collaboration for the Recovery and Environmental Adjustment Portman Bay, formed by the Ministry of Environment, Rural and Marine Affairs, the Autonomous Community of Murcia and City of La Union

At the same Juan Carlos Martín participated Fragueiro, Secretary General of the Sea, the director of Sustainability and the Sea Coast, Alicia Paz Antolin, the government delegate in Murcia, Rafael González Tovar, and Francisca Baraza, head of the Demarcation Coastal in Murcia.

By the Autonomous Community of Murcia was attended by the Director of Public Works and Planning, José Ballesta, the Director General of Urban and Regional Planning, Antonio Javier Navarro, and the Director General for Transport and Ports, Carmen Maria Sandoval.

They have also involved the mayor of Union, Francisco Barnabas, and the representative of the social groups in this county, Ginés Guerrero.

During the course of the meeting has agreed to create another committee, comprising representatives of the 3 administrations, to negotiate with the owners of Sierra Mining to achieve financial contribution to the regeneration project Portman Bay.

The latter will consist of: Francisca Baraza, head of the Coastal Authority in Murcia as a representative of the Ministry of Environment, Rural and Marine Affairs, the Head of the Department of Industry and Energy, Francisco Faraco, by the Government Delegation in Murcia, Director General for Transport and Ports, Carmen Maria Sandoval, by the Autonomous Community, and the mayor of La Union, Francisco Bernabé.

Among the issues addressed by the Monitoring Committee have been those of Portman: analysis of results and conclusions of the research at the University of Murcia, as well as the processing status and development of various projects related to the bay (Pilot Project, the State Environmental Impact Report reclamation project or the marina), among others.

Currently, the Ministry of Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs is conducting a pilot project with an investment of nearly 6 million euros in order to achieve stabilization of the ground and blanketing the heavy materials that are part the bulk material.

In this regard it is noteworthy that the University of Murcia, in particular, practitioners of Agricultural Chemistry Department are conducting the methodology of work and experimental studies.

The results in this pilot phase will be presented at the Monitoring Committee for information, and will begin a second phase will also have the collaboration of the University of Murcia.
