Opened new facilities of the Municipal Library (26/05/2009)

The Mayor of La Union, Francisco Bernabé, the Minister of Culture, Pedro Alberto Cruz, and the Director General of Books, Archives and Libraries, Francisco Giménez, inaugurated the new premises of the Public Library "Juan Pujol" located in the municipal offices of the Town Hall located in the building, "El Progreso" (Old City).

The Mayor of La Union, Francisco Bernabé, has stated that "the transfer of the Municipal Library spacious and functional units to offer a better service to all users."

For his part, Minister of Culture, Pedro Alberto Cruz, praised the new facilities of the Library "will become a great space, a reference for culture in the Union."

The new facility, covering an area of 500 m2, have bebeteca (play area and introduction to reading for children up to 6 years), large areas of study: 80 points for reading, and periodicals; media library (consisting of 6 teams computers); receipt and deposit of the bibliographical.

Municipal Public Library has available to its users more than 20,000 volumes covering all areas of knowledge, in addition to 2,000 audiovisual and electronic documents.

The Library also hosts a permanent Municipal named "Distinguished corner" for the exhibition of personal belongings, books, photographs and other documents of the brothers Andrew and Mary Cegarra Salcedo, Asensio Sáez, as well as other distinguished world unionenses letters.

Moreover, the investment made by the Ministry of Culture to provide the Library of adequate furniture equipment has reached the amount of 75,000 euros.

Municipal Public Library has adopted the name of Juan Pujol (1883-1967).

The unionense Juan Pujol Martínez is one of the highlights in the history of Spanish journalism.

Lawyer, journalist, poet and novelist, was also a deputy in parliament for Madrid and Mallorca.

He was founder and director of the newspapers a number of newspapers: "La Gaceta de la Sierra", "Morning", "La Nación", "Information", "Sunday" and "Madrid."

Similarly, he worked as a newspaper correspondent in Paris, London, Holland, Poland, Turkey, Italy and the battle lines during the First World War.

Among the honors he received include the Grand Cross of Civil Merit, Commendation of Cisneros, the title of Journalist of Honor and the National Journalism Award.
