The Community spends over one million euros to complete the works of the regeneration project in Barrio de San Gil Union (23/07/2009)

More than two million total investment will provide a major boost to the neighborhood social unionense

The Minister of Public Works and Planning, José Ballesta, accompanied by the mayor of La Union, Francisco Bernabé, managing director and the Housing and Land Institute (IVS), Jane Brown, today visited the works being carried out to regenerate the Barrio de San Gil, in its second phase, where the regional government will invest 1.2 million euros.

According to José Ballesta, "the regional government is working with the City and the Sierra Minera Foundation to develop the project of urban renewal and social impetus of this district, in which the total investment made by the Ministry amounted to EUR 2,214,815 that adding this second action raised to 60 the number of homes rehabilitated. "

The rehabilitation works for the second phase will be held on 48 homes of public and social premises.

The improvements provide for the demolition of seven blocks of flats in the original building are in poor condition, which have already been demolished four, improving energy efficiency and insulation of buildings, the recovery of structural elements, improving accessibility and livability, and the adaptation and recovery of the spaces in public areas.

This project continues the work begun in December 2007 by the IVS led to the recovery of 12 buildings, built in 1980 as part of the 152 social housing units on four three-storey blocks around a large interior space that made up the group .

In this first phase, completed in late 2008, was the demolition of the ruined items, sanitation facilities and the repair of buildings and their surroundings.

Improvements for a better quality of life

This urban development project, coordinated by the IVS, is part of a framework for joint action between the regional and local administrations and the Fundación Sierra Minera for urban and social transformation of the Barrio de San Gil, based on the comprehensive development program which has been working this body, which meets the diverse needs of the neighborhood and the city and has the participation and involvement of people in improving their quality of life.
