The Commission convenes MARM Monitoring for 26 Portman (13/10/2009)

The Directorate General of Environmental Quality and Evaluation Committee will report on the project's environmental processing

The head of the Coastal Authority, Francisca Baraza, has reported that the Ministry of Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs (MARM) is planning to convene on the 26th October the Commission for Monitoring of Portman, as a result of the meeting held recently the government delegate in Murcia and Coastal Authority itself in the region.

According to the above, the head of the Coastal Authority in the Region of Murcia considered a serious error that the mayor of La Union unilaterally convene days before the Commission to some members of the same.

In his view, this is a move to politicize the issue, not at all conducive to the proposed Portman and also questioned the mayor's interest in serious and collegial decision-making for the benefit of the regeneration of the bay.

Baraza pointed out that the Ministry remains committed to the regeneration of the Portman Bay, referred to in the agreement between the Marmara, the Autonomous Community of Murcia and the city of La Union.

Proof of this are the various actions it is doing in the area since 2007 to stabilize and inerting the contaminated material as part of a pilot project with a budget of 5.5 million euros have already been implemented in a first phase and 3 5 million in a second phase in the period 2009-2010, which includes collaboration with the University of Murcia for further progress in risk analysis and the most appropriate methodology for the treatment of contaminated material.

The head of the Coastal Authority has indicated that in parallel to this process is currently underway to handle the project's environmental regeneration and environmental soundness of Portman Bay.

Your Environmental Impact Assessment and the outcome of the public information submitted to the Directorate General of Quality and Environmental Assessment in July 2008.

During this year from the Directorate General has been requested supplementary reports to different agencies (Environmental Health, IGME, etc) making available all relevant information to evaluate rigorously the impact of this project.

It is therefore expected to have short term in response to the above Quality Management and Environmental Assessment will be on this project, to be forwarded to the members of the Monitoring Committee of the Convention.

Francisca Baraza pointed out that pending the availability of that answer is not possible to work on a defined project and a specific budget.

It is therefore not possible to capture in the 2010 budget any money.

"The MMARM continues to work to find a viable solution to this serious problem of environmental pollution, investigating different methods of treatment to ensure proper management of existing tailings in the bay of Portman, in order to avoid any risk condition and both human health and the environment.

That is the priority, "he said.
